Dangerous Spaces

I’ve touched on this subject a little in a previous post but I thought I would get a little specific as to locations.

My aunts here all tell me that the mountains(or hills if you prefer) in front of the property have Colombian Guerilla soldiers and that I should stay away from there.

They say that there are 2 Paramilitary soldier camps in the mountains behind their land.  Although the last sighting was about 7 years ago so personally I doubt they are still there.  I walked a large portion of that land the second day I was here and all I saw was farm animals and some barbed wire fences that farmers use.

They also say that behind the house there is a tiger.  This was supposedly sighted a couple weeks ago.  Now as to whether there really is a tiger or if it is instead a jaguar or maybe a mountain lion I cant say for sure.  I have my doubts that there would actually be a tiger in Colombia as tigers are not native here.  Tigers from what I know of are only native to Asia and India.  But you never know.  I’ve heard Venezuelans talk of tigers in the mountains too.  I did see and explore a very small cave in a cliff side, but all it had was a wasp nest above it and goat droppings inside.

My cousin Armando tells my that in the mountains toward the front of the property there are cocaine farmers.

One thing I do know for a fact is that people down here tend to exaggerate things.  But on the other hand my family here(Yanitza’s family) has seen Guerrilla and Paramilitaries up close and personal.
