Hiking in La Guajira

I took a hike into Los Banderos mountains with two of my girlfriend’s cousins tagging along.  It was hot as could be, but I always take lots of water when I hike, as well as my trusty machete.  We hiked up to two high-voltage power line towers, sat for a half an hour taking in the view and goofing off, then headed back.  The whole trip was about 5 hours.  On the way out there was a lot of cutting through brush.  One plant is a real son of a gun and put a bunch of thorns in my hand (I swear it did! The plant just up and moved and attacked me! jaja!)  My hand had bumps kind of like poison ivy on it for the next two weeks because the thorns are very tiny and some get stuck under your skin where you can’t get them out and cause mini-infections.  The only creature we saw besides birds was a tiny scorpion.  Although there are other creatures here in La Guajira.  I helped a cousin kill a giant centipede that was about a foot long and 2 inches wide with the legs.  Not long after that I saw some kind of brown snake about 2 ft. long.  I’ve also seen a coral snake before.

    • Me too. But if you’re talking about Alaska I hear that even you guys are plagued with moskitos in the Summer. And I couldn’t deal with the whole daytime for 6 months thing. I saw that movie insomnia. I think that would drive me nuts too, haha. But of course there are moose and bear in other parts of the world :).
